While families are waiting for intake, Safe Bridge LLC encourages them to stay connected to trusted local and statewide support systems. These resources can help with immediate safety concerns, mental health support, food assistance, housing needs, public benefits, family services, and youth behavioral health referrals.
1. Immediate Safety Concerns
If a child, young person, or family member is in immediate danger, call 911. This includes active threats, medical emergencies, violence, or any situation where someone’s safety is at immediate risk.
988 Virginia Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
Families can call or text 988 for immediate mental health crisis support. The 988 Lifeline connects callers with trained crisis workers who can provide support, de-escalation, and connection to local mental health or community resources.
Virginia Child Protective Services Hotline
Concerns about child abuse or neglect can be reported to the Virginia Child Protective Services Hotline at 1-800-552-7096. Families should call 911 if a child is in immediate danger.
Virginia Statewide Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline
Families experiencing domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, or unsafe home situations can call 1-800-838-8238 or text 804-793-9999. The hotline is free, confidential, and available 24/7.
2. State Resources
2-1-1 Virginia
Families can dial 2-1-1 or text CONNECT to 247211 to find help with food, housing, healthcare, utilities, childcare, transportation, and other community needs. This is a helpful first step when a family is unsure where to begin.
Virginia CommonHelp
Virginia CommonHelp allows families to apply for public benefits such as SNAP, TANF, Medicaid/FAMIS, childcare assistance, and energy assistance. Families can apply online, check eligibility, renew benefits, and manage case information through the portal. For benefit support by phone, families can call 1-855-635-4370.
Local Department of Social Services Finder
Families can use the Virginia Department of Social Services local agency finder to locate their city or county Department of Social Services. Local DSS offices can help families apply for benefits, check the status of a case, report changes, and connect with services in their community.
Children’s Services Act
The Children’s Services Act supports services for at-risk youth and families in Virginia. Families may be connected through social services, schools, court services, behavioral health providers, or other community agencies.

Regional Housing Crisis Hotline
Families in Hampton Roads who are experiencing a housing crisis can call 757-587-4202. The hotline helps connect individuals and families to shelter referrals, housing support, case management, and related community resources.
Region Five Community Services Boards
Community Services Boards provide local access to public behavioral health, developmental, and substance use services. Families can use Region Five’s CSB directory to find the correct provider for their city or county. For a mental health crisis in Region Five, families can also call 757-656-7755.

Resources757 is a Hampton Roads resource directory for families seeking help with housing, food, healthcare, education, childcare, family support, employment, and other community needs. Families experiencing a housing crisis can also use the regional hotline at 757-587-4202.
Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore
Families in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Southampton, and surrounding areas can contact the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore for food assistance and local pantry referrals. The main Norfolk office is located at 800 Tidewater Drive. Families can use the website to find nearby food resources.
Virginia Peninsula Foodbank
Families in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, York County, Gloucester, Mathews, and Surry can contact the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank for food assistance and community food distribution resources. The foodbank can be reached at 757-596-7188.

Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Healthcare
Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Healthcare provides access to mental health, substance use, and developmental services. Emergency and crisis services are available 24 hours a day by calling 757-548-7000.
Hampton Human Services
Hampton families can contact Human Services for public benefits, family support, child and adult protective services, and resources that support family stability and self-sufficiency. The main phone number is 757-727-1800.
Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board
The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board provides behavioral health and substance use services for youth, adults, and families. For children’s services, families can call 757-788-0600. For emergency and crisis services, call 757-788-0011.
James City County Children’s Services Act
Families in James City County may be connected to Children’s Services Act support through social services, schools, court services, behavioral health providers, or local health partners. The CSA Coordinator can be reached at 757-259-3194, and the Social Services reception desk can be reached at 757-259-3100.
Newport News Human Services
Newport News families can contact Human Services for benefit programs, child welfare support, prevention services, parenting programs, youth services, childcare assistance, and homelessness prevention resources. The main phone number is 757-926-6300.
